Peaches, the pig had her litter last week!! Seven healthy piglets, just as cute as they could be!! It wasn’t her first time, but it was mine, and I was over the moon when I went to check on her as soon as I woke up on her due date. The boys were excited, and we had friends come over that night to see the babies.
The next morning, when I went to check on them, I found she had squished two in the night. I wasn’t prepared for that. Hormonal and very pregnant. My husband had already left for his day, and I called my mom bawling. “Mom, she squished her babies!” She said,”WHO DID!?!” Which instantly made me laugh in between sobs and helped get me ready to take care of the dead piglets.
So, my nine month pregnant self grabbed a shovel and a bucket and scooped up the littles she accidently squished. Despite the accident, Peaches is a wonderful mama, doesn’t mind me getting in and trying to hold her babes. Just so long as she gets her belly scratches, too.
As with everything, there are always lessons to be learned in homesteading, motherhood, and life as a whole. I’m thankful for the five thriving piglets and that Peaches isn’t a scary huge mama sow that wants to eat me. Now on to our first calving. Who will go first?? Me or the cow????
